Projects

Twin Cities has participated in many committee projects over the years and is always looking for new opportunities to help out. Here is a list of some of the projects we have been involved in.

Karlsberghaus - Oktoberfest at the Aud

The Kiwanis Club of Twin Cities took over running Karlsberghaus back in 1971. It is an extremely large project run almost exclusively by volunteers. A Twin Cities member chairs a committee of Kiwanis and non Kiwanis volunteers and they meet all year long planning the events. It is a wonderful example of partnership among many individuals and charities. All profits are shared and benefit many organizations and charities within the Waterloo region.

Karlsberghaus is one of the largest festhalles and boosts the best large band - the Saxons. Karlsberghaus has won many awards throughout the years.

The behind the scenes running of such a large festhalle is not only a lot of fun but it's a great learning experience.

Kiwanis Park

Kiwanis Park opened in 1967 as a centennial project through the efforts of the Kiwanis Club of the Twin Cities (the Kiwanis Club) and the City of Kitchener and has been used continuously over the past 35 years as a summer recreation area, with a particular focus on the 2.5 acre swimming pool and picnic grounds. Over the years, the Kiwanis Club of Twin Cities has donated many thousands of volunteer hours to the park and currently runs the Snack Shack.

Community Housing

The Twin Cities Club owns two subsidized housing complexes.

Cedar Court which was purchased in 1974 is a 72 unit apartment building geared to seniors.

Valleyview is a townhouse complex with a total of 44 units geared to families that was purchased in 1984.

For information, please visit the website, Subsidized Housing in Waterloo Region.

Bingo

Twin Cities has been running bingos since 1983. We run a bingo every four weeks at the K-W Gaming Centre on Krug. There are a number of jobs at the bingo hall and we all take on roles and work together as a team. The club has run bingos for many, many years in order to put money back into the KW Community.

Bursaries for High School Students

Since 1959, the club has provided an opportunity for students in the KW area to apply for our bursaries. We contact all the high school principals each year in the spring to submit a set number of applications. We review the applications and make selections based on set criteria.

If you are a Kitchener Waterloo student who is attending an accredited post secondary school and are interested in applying for one of our bursaries, please speak to your principal.

Girl Guides

Twin Cities has helped the Girl Guides in opening their camp, Camp Conestogo, as well as help them make repairs to their facilities.

The Girl Guides have been an extremely supportive partner in the running of Karlsberghaus.

Kiwanis Music Festival

Many of our members volunteer to help with running of the Kiwanis Music Festival which is run by the KW Kiwanis Club.

Operation Christmas Child

Twin City members have signed up to help pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

As well in 2010 along with the other Kiwanis clubs in the area, we partnered with Operation Christmas Child to donate, shop and pack a truck full of boxes for the cause.

Salvation Army

Twin City members have taken the time to help with the Salvation Army kettles at Christmas time.

Wonder of Winter - A Festival of Lights

For a very long time Twin Cities has helped with the Christmas lights at Waterloo Park.

Pride Stables

The Central Ontario Developmental Riding Program (C.O.D.R.P.)/Pride Stables offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons to people with disabilities. Twin Cities has donated picnic tables and the time to build picnic tables at Pride Stables.

Trail Cleanup

Twin Cities has participated in trail cleanups with the other Kiwanis clubs in the area during the spring.

Travelogue

The club ran a travelogue program as a fundraising and community service project for many years. It started with six shows which were shown twice over a six month winter season and then changed to a one-night showing in a larger venue.

Sugar Bush Express

From 1968 to 1977 the club ran a train from Kitchener to the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. A mock train hold up in St. Jacobs was staged with the help of a local riding club in full cowboy gear.

Kiwanis Bus

For many years the club supplied a bus free of charge to charitable organization and special groups for transport within the Waterloo region.

YOUTH Projects

Key Leader

Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership - it comes from helping others succeed.

Each year Twin Cities sponsor youth in the K/W community to attend Key Leader weekends.

Circle K Club

Circle K clubs are the largest student run volunteer organizations of its kind, with over 12,000 members on over 500 campuses in 15 countries.

Circle K is a sponsored program of Kiwanis International.

Circle K mirrors the mandate of Kiwanis at the university/college level in making its community a better place to live with a special emphasis on young children.

Twin Cities has sponsored and mentored Circle K - University of Waterloo for many years.

Key Club

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students worldwide. Today, Key Club exists on almost 5,000 high school campuses throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and most recently Asia and Australia. Membership tops 250,000 students and continues to grow.

Key Club International is an organization of individual Key Clubs and is funded by nominal dues paid by every member. Its officers are high school leaders elected by the members at District and International conventions. The organization offers a wide range of opportunities to its members.

Twin Cities has been involved with sponsoring Key Club in the high schools dating back to 1973. This provides high school students the opportunity to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

Social Events

Over the years, there have been many different social events held: Valentine's dance, pool party, family picnics, Christmas parties, ladies' nights, theatre parties, trips to Blue Jay's games, mini golf, club anniversary parties.

A big part of the Kiwanis experience is meeting new people and having fun. The conventions held by Kiwanis International and at the District level are another way of meeting more people from around the world.
